Jewellery Care

Care

To extend the longevity of your jewellery pieces, it is extremely important to care for your jewellery as they are created with precious materials. Although most people believe diamonds are indestructible, this is simply not the case. Diamonds are the hardest mineral and fall at a ‘10’ on Mohs Scale of Hardness, however, they can still scratch and crack when knocked. Please be mindful of your jewellery pieces, especially rings, as we use our hands for many different tasks every day.

Melanie Joy highly suggests removing all jewellery when taking part in any physical activity, lifting any heavy object, or cleaning with harsh chemicals (this includes going to the gym, moving to a new house, gardening, or cleaning your home). Whilst wearing your jewellery pieces, please also avoid applying any skin cream, spraying any hairsprays/deodorants/perfumes, or entering any pools/spas/baths/showers. These actions will help reduce any knocks, scratches, or abrasions to either the metal or gemstone, as well as help to reduce any tarnishing or discolouration of the metal.

Please note, any plated jewellery will require extra care and are not recommended for everyday wear, as the plating is a thin layer of metal on the surface of the jewellery. If careful measures are not adhered to, this can result in flaking or peeling of the plating.

Cleaning

Did you know that you can help keep your jewellery pieces clean and shiny?! Simply use lukewarm soapy water with a soft toothbrush to clean your beautiful piece. Please be mindful not to use this process on any soft gemstones, including opal, pearl, and turquoise. Using a soft polishing cloth, specifically made for jewellery, can also help keep your jewellery clean.

Storing

Melanie Joy strongly recommends carefully storing your jewellery pieces when they are not worn. At home, careful measures can include correct storage in jewellery boxes rather than its packaging; laying chains out flat to avoid knots or kinks (which can lead to breakages); and keeping your jewellery pieces in a cool, dark, dry, safe place to avoid direct sunlight. Should you wish to remove your jewellery pieces whilst out, such as working out at the gym, it is recommended to place your jewellery within a soft jewellery pouch. Do not place your jewellery in your purse or wallet as this will result in damaging your precious pieces.
